Cataract Dilemmas


Prof Chee Soon Phaik

Prof Chee Soon Phaik is a Professor at the National University of Singapore and Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, Singapore. She is a senior consultant and heads both the Cataract Subspecialty and Ocular Inflammation and Immunology Service at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). 

In addition to her clinical commitments, Dr Chee also serves as a group lead member of the Cataract research team at the Singapore Eye Research Institute. She obtained her Maser of Medicine (Ophthalmology) at the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh and the College of Ophthalmologists, UK. She subsequently completed her fellowship in Uveitis and Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital Surgery at Moorfield's Eye Hospital, London in 1993. 

Dr Chee's research interests in cataract include the management of complicated cataracts such as the dense posterior polar cataract, subluxated cataracts, premium intraocular lens implants and femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery.




Dr Fam Han Bor
Senior Consultant and Head of Cataract Service, NHG Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH)

Dr Fam Han Bor is active as a clinician, researcher and instructor, having given over 100 presentations in international and regional conferences. His research has been published in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmology. He has conducted numerous LASIK instructional courses, medical-in-service and live surgeries throughout Asia. Dr Fam is widely sought after as a respected global key-opinion leader in the field of phacoemulsification, intraocular lens design, refractive surgery, corneal topography, ocular wavefront aberrations and visual optics. He is also an active member of the prestigious IOL Power Club, an expert group dedicated to improving cataract outcomes. 

He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore and received his subspecialty training in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada. 




Dr Yeo Tun Kuan
Consultant, NHG Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH)

Dr Yeo Tun Kuan is a Consultant at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. He is part of the cataract, implant and anterior segment team. He completed his anterior segment fellowship training with Prof Graham Barrett at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Lions Eye Institute, Australia. His main research interests are in complex cataract surgery, lens design, biometry, and intraocular lens formulas. Dr Yeo developed the EVO and EVO toric IOL formulas.


Dr Don Pek
Consultant, NHG Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH)

Dr Don Pek is a Consultant with the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. He received his medical training from the University of Glasgow and also completed a Bachelor of Medical Science Honours degree. He completed his post graduate training and has been elected as a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of Ediburgh and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Besides his training in General Ophthalmology, he has a special interest in anterior segment reconstruction, refractive surgery and complex cataracts, and is part of the NHG Eye Institute @ TTSH's anterior segment and cataract service. He also regularly volunteers in non profit organisations to provide free cataract surgery to people with poor access to healthcare in regions such as Ladakh, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Dr Don Pek was awarded the Healthcare Humanities Award by President SR Nathan in 2011 for his continued contributions in providing medical care to communities with poor access. 



Prof Simon Holland
Clinical Professor, University of British Columbia

Simon Holland, MB, FRCSC, FRCS, FRCOPH, MRCP, works at the Pacific Laser Eye Centre with research interests in therapeutic applications of corneal laser surgery, crosslinking, topography-guided techniques and diffuse lamellar keratitis. Dr Holland is a clinical professor at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in the Cornea Division and also interested in clinical research in anterior segment inflammation after surgery, infectious keratitis and phakic lens implants. He has authored more than 60 publications, several book chapters and serves as the chair of the Canadian TASS Taskforce and co-chair of the International Ophthalmology and Public Health Committee of Canadian Ophthalmic Society and section editor for Cornea of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr Holland is head of the UBC Eye Outreach Program in Northern British Columbia and the Vice-President of ORBIS Canada.



Dr Ronald Yeoh 
Medical Director, Eye & Retina Surgeons

Ron Yeoh is Adjunct Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Singapore National Eye Centre and is a founding partner of Eye & Retina Surgeons Singapore. 

He has been active for many years in teaching the finer points of phacoemulsification, FLACS and advanced technology lens implantation. 

He is the President of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) and sits on the Program Committee for the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS).

In recognition of his work in cataract and implant surgery he was elected to the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC) in 2012.
